What is it?

A number to words converter turns a figure written in digits (42) into its spelled-out cardinal form (forty-two), applying each language's own rules: hyphens in English compounds, the French 'et un' and quatre-vingts, Spanish fused veintiuno, German one-word compounds, Portuguese 'e' connectors. This tool spells the same number in English, French, Spanish, German and Portuguese.

When to use it

Writing a cheque or a contract where amounts must appear in words, filling in legal or administrative forms, teaching or learning how numbers are written, proofreading translated documents, or settling doubts like 'is it forty or fourty?' (it's forty).

Common mistakes

Spelling 40 as 'fourty' (it's forty). Forgetting hyphens in 21-99 compounds (twenty-one, ninety-nine). Mixing up scales across languages: the English billion is 10⁹, but the French billion and Spanish billón are 10¹².

FAQ

How large a number can I convert?
Up to 15 digits: 999,999,999,999,999 (nine hundred ninety-nine trillion and change). The decimal part is capped at 15 digits too, read digit by digit.
Does it write 'and', as in 'one hundred and one'?
No - the tool follows the US convention: 101 = one hundred one. British style inserts 'and' before the final tens or units (one hundred and one); add it yourself if you prefer.
Can it write ordinals (first, second) or currency amounts?
No - it spells cardinal numbers only. For an amount, spell the number and append the unit yourself: 42 = forty-two, so 'forty-two euros'.
